BIOGRAPHY

As VJ, as SIX

(UMBRA/six)

How incredibly this video is!”

NAOTO TSUJITA (UMBRA / six)

Naoto Tsujita began his career as a VJ in the latter half of the 1990’s, based mainly in the Kansai region. Drawing from his own tacit awareness of the movements in genres like techno, minimalist and click, Naoto Tsujita has developed his own succinct and original style of high quality experimental visual works. His monochrome visuals, in particular, capture the viewer’s eyes through their unnerving brightness and rapidly changing shapes.
In recent years, Naoto Tsujita has continued to challenge himself, making extensive use of projection methods such as multi-screen, see-through screens and mapping in order to create new worlds through his work.

Based primarily in west Japan, Naoto Tsujita has undertaken many projects as a VJ. In 2012, he started his own minimal and click techno club night, InMinus, while also working as the resident VJ and organizer for the regular club night, High Resolution in Okayama. He has also been closely involved with underground events both within and outside of the prefecture. In 2014, he paired up with artist DJ ZEN to form the audiovisual unit, SIX. In the next year, with the purpose of spreading new forms of expression to the area, SIX began the irregular event, UMBRA in Takamatsu and Okayama, with the pair acting as resident artists. UMBRA’s guest acts are notable artists at the front line of the techno scene. Thus, the high quality underground event builds a close network between these acts and artists of nearby prefectures who are respected by both Naoto Tsujita and DJ ZEN.Naoto Tsujita has continued to approach the scene from all sides, including organizing the joint party, Anagram/Kurozawa Dream in the noise cafe, iL in Takamatsu.

Naoto Tsujita also has another side as a video creator. In September 2011, he started the creative channel, DJ WADA x VJ Naoto Tsujita. Collaborating with DJ Wada (Sublime Records/Dirreta/Co-Fusion) Naoto Tsujita creates and uploads music videos to accompany Wada’s original music. Of these, “Beatbeets”, uploaded in November 2011, was taken notice of and uploaded by Sublime Records’ official YouTube channel and was highly evaluated from all sides. He continues to produce music videos for tracks released from Wada’s self-produced label, Dirreta, which began in 2014. At around the same time, the entire archive of works was moved from YouTube to Vimeo.
The full version of the music video for “The Blue Door” from the third Dirreta series was shown at DOMMUNE, an event sponsored by Naohiro Ukawa. The video was widely praised for its original creative expression.

As an art director, Naoto Tsujita has worked on the release of Hiroshi Watanabe’s 2016 EP, “Multiverse”. Watanabe was the first Japanese artist to work with Transmat Records, a label presided over by one of the forerunners of Detroit’s techno scene, Derrick May. Unlike previous projects, Naoto Tsujita was responsible for all creative aspects of the music video, from planning to production. The video was uploaded to Transit Record’s official YouTube channel in February 2018. Tsujita drew inspiration from the brilliant concept of Watanabe’s track to create the visuals.
The first Japanese to produce an official music video for Transmat Records, Naoto Tsujita received favorable feedback worldwide, including from May himself, who wrote, “How incredible this video is!”

While video was his main medium until recently, Naoto Tsujita is ever seeking to expand his work into a wide variety of fields. No matter the medium, Naoto Tsujita brings with him his own unique and precise creativity and interpretation.

six( D J Z E N × V J ツジタナオト)

six

The audio visual unit, SIX, was formed in 2014 by DJ ZEN and VJ Naoto Tsujita. With DJ ZEN crafting ingenious performances using storytelling and a punk spirit as his base, and VJ Naoto Tsujita, who conveys his worldview through constructed complex monochrome images.Their unique DJxVJ style creates a space in which the audience’s five senses are all at once expanded and at times, confused.Their careers and cultivated sensitivities are inspired by the impact of the trance and techno underground scenes of the late 90’s.Throughout their careers, they have created a close network with notable artists in the underground scene whom they respect. In 2015, SIX launched an irregular party, “UMBRA” with the purpose of creating and promoting a new form of expression.
